Because LADA is often misdiagnosed as Type 2, treatment usually starts of with the classic one of diet & exercise, followed by oral medication and progresses on to that of Type 1's, insulin.
If LADA is diagnosed early then the doctor has a choice. He can either go the route suggested above or he may decide that the best thing to do is start you on insulin straight away.
As LADA patients in the early stages have a number of their beta cells still working there is a school of thought that feels going onto insulin may prolong the time it takes for their destruction, making control easier.
Whichever way he chooses to go eventually it will come down to the use of insulin. Treatment will then be the same as given for Type 1 Diabetes.
